About

Mezzanin is an art gallery and open studio ran by a young Sarajevo based artist. It is wholly dedicated to young emerging artists of the ex-Yugo region, and aims to give those artists visibility and the space to exist as independent artists in a region where older and already well-established artists, as well as artists backed by institution and academies take up all the space.

Mezzanin actively fights against the perception that status is what makes the artist, that one needs to be recognized by institutions and the academia to consider himself an artist and be deserving of an exhibition. We look at the work itself rather than who made the work.

Every month, a different young artist uses the space for a solo exhibition, whether that may be traditional paintings, digital illustrations, photography or any other form of visual media.

Mezzanin also operates as an open studio focused on screen printing, where works of the guest artists are printed and then sold at the gallery. The gallery gradually is building a catalogue of prints from various local artists that are up for sale, a combination of screen-printed works, archival quality giclee prints and lino cut prints.

Additionally, the screen-printing studio is also used to print a selection of works from those artists on shirts, growing a collection of shirts with designs of local emerging artists, turning their work into a wearable piece, and making them reach the widest possible audience.

The gallery is always open to new exhibitions, if you are an artist, between 18 and 35 years of age and from the ex-Yugoslavian region, don't hesitate to reach out and inquire about a possible exhibition.
